Lunations and Long-term Aspects This month has more astrological action than most, including a couple long-term aspects as well as three lunations, including a New Year's Eve eclipse. A look at these should provide at least a glimpse of what is in store for the coming year. First of all there's the Saturn - Pluto square that has been in effect for a while and was exact, at least for the first time, November 15. However, since both of these are outer planets that not only move slowly but also have significantly long retrograde periods, this aspect will not only be hanging around for a while but will be exact for a second time on January 31. The general tone of this aspect was described in last month's horoscope. However, since it's going to be in effect until mid-March, then resume between July 22 - September 16, it's worth looking at a bit more closely. This month those of you born between February 20 - 25 will be most affected. Pluto will be sextile your Natal Sun, a favorable aspect that usually brings an opportunity or other positive situation. Pluto is in your 11th House of friends, organizations, group associations, hopes and wishes where his most likely function will be to effect a complete remodeling operation on this part of your life. During this transit you can expect to see significant changes come about for any number of reasons. If you've been hanging out with the wrong people it will become apparent. Perhaps they're holding you back in some way, either due to having a negative attitude or perhaps simply by taking up too much of your time that could be spent elsewhere. Goals, hopes and wishes reside in the 11th House as well, which is an interesting placement. I have pondered this quite a bit since I find astrology much more meaningful when I can see a logical flow. My impression is that these goals and such are those that we cannot accomplish alone, that require the help, support and perhaps even the intervention, of others. Thus, these goals aren't those of a personal improvement nature where you are completely in the driver's seat. These are goals that are bigger than what you can accomplish alone. Thus, you need to revisit what your goals are, determine if they fit in this House, and then take a hard look at what is required to get there. Are you making progress or stuck in the mud? If so, why, what is holding you back? Pluto, the zodiacal forensic expert, will certainly help you determine anything that needs to change. Pluto can be brutal, particularly if we're not moving in the right direction. He can decide "Enough of this crap" and bring about a major transformation in a very short period of time. For example, his handiwork would include such things as natural disasters or fires that in the blink of an eye wipe out everything you have. The most important thing to remember about Pluto is that he's really about rebirth. However, in order to do so, there is usually something old and worn out that needs to be let go or burned away to make room for the new. Pluto is also about power. Perhaps there is someone in your group associations who's driving the train when it should be you. Think about whom you yield to as the decision maker and whether this is getting you where you want to be or not. Pluto can make you particularly resistant to authority or anyone pushing you around. And this will be exacerbated by Saturn, who is the planet who represents authority figures among other things. Saturn is in your 8th House of transformations, sex, death and regeneration, and other people's resources. Taxes and debt also reside in this house. If these elements sound slightly familiar, it's because Pluto rules the zodiacal 8th House so his energy is going to have a natural affinity for this House. As noted above, Saturn represents authority figures, responsibility, obligations, delays, structure, boundaries and hard lessons. He can also represent older individuals in your life and those who serve as a mentor. Saturn tends to be patient, sometimes moving so slowly that the delays get on your last nerve, especially when he's retrograde, which will happen in January. He will rub your nose in something and make you figure it out on your own where Pluto, as noted earlier, will declare "Enough of this crap" and zap a situation so that it can no longer be ignored. With these two planets squared off there's no telling how this will play out, particularly if you're not getting the hint and moving in the right direction. Saturn is trying to teach you something of a transformational nature that will bring you to a new level of wisdom, maturity and understanding, yet this is in conflict somehow with Pluto. Saturn is quincunx your Natal Sun if your birthday falls in that February range noted earlier, indicating that an adjustment or change of course if called for. These two planets are considered astrological "bad boys" and their transits can be quite painful. When you're in the midst of such a transit it's often hard to see how these lessons are "for your own good." However, the Universe is really trying to help and the more you resist or refuse to see what you should be doing the harder it will be. Since this aspect will be around for many months to come you have plenty of time to figure it out. All planets have their own energy and we can either harness it or fight it. Only you can decide which one it will be. Another long-term influence that will be out there for several months is another Mars retrograde cycle. This happens every two years and two months, a rather awkward cycle that always tends to take us a bit by surprise. He does progress through the signs, however, and thus the houses of your natal chart. For example, last time he went RX in Cancer and backed into Gemini, this time he's in Leo, and next time he'll be in Virgo. Leo is your 6th House of work, health and pets and Mars RX tends to make you more reactive as opposed to active and also flushes out unresolved conflict. The duration of this transit will last from December 20 until March 10, 2010 and during that time he will be quincunx your Natal Sun if your birthday falls between February 19 - March 11. He has already contacted your Natal Sun over the past few months, but he will be doing so again as he goes RX, so he will work backwards this time. As noted earlier, a quincunx calls for an adjustment or change of course and this time it applies to your work, health, or possibly your pets, though this seems remote unless your pets represent a significant part of your life and you let them walk all over you and run your household, which I suppose is very possible for a kind-hearted Pisces. Anyway, if there is something that needs to be cleared up in this part of your life, Mars is going to get to it. Work in the 6th House sense includes not only such things as your day job but anything else that occupies your time, especially where you're productive. It can include volunteer work, avocations, or even hobbies where you produce something with your hands such as carpentry. Since this is also your house of health, which will reflect your emotional state, there is also the possibility for health concerns during this time. If you suspect you have a health problem but have been ignoring it, there's a high likelihood that it will get your attention and demand attention at some point during this transit. Mars can indicate surgery, though this is more likely with a square or opposition. This could be occurring in your individual Natal Chart, however, so don't take it for granted that this doesn't point in that direction, especially if you've been ignoring any ominous symptoms. A good indication of what this transit wants to accomplish for you is likely to appear right around January 29. Keep an eye out, if you don't already know. Mars will go direct on March 10, but the retrograde "shadow period" will last until May 17, which is when Mars will catch up to the zodiacal degree where he went RX. By that time, all should be resolved. The Full Moon on December 2 is in Gemini, your 4th House of home environment, which includes your physical home and everyone in it. If your birthday is within a day or so of March 1 this will be most noticeable. A Full Moon typically heralds an ending or culmination, such as the completion of a milestone and shifting to the next phase. A tug-o-war between home and your career of some sort is likely to occur at this time as well. News of a disruptive nature that presents a challenge is likely, especially for those of you born right around March 13 who have Uranus sitting on your Natal Sun, which I'm sure you've felt for quite a while now in the way of surprises. You may have also been uncharacteristically rebellious or feel a need to break away from the status quo. If such an event occurs, be sure to look closely for an opportunity to bring something new into your life of a positive nature, perhaps a new friend or group that may tie in nicely with what Pluto is trying to accomplish with your group associations or goals. The New Moon on December 16 occurs in Sagittarius, your 10th House of career, reputation, public image and status, which will bring something new to this area of your life. This will be most noticeable and potentially unexpected or even disruptive for Pisces born within a day or so of March 14. The part of the 10th House that most people tend to miss, especially when they associate it strictly with their career ambitions, is all the implications of "status." This can be everything from graduating from school, getting married or divorced, buying or selling property, getting promoted or fired, becoming a parent or having a child leave home, or just about anything that involves a title or label. There are a lot of opportunities associated with this lunation, so be sure you look for them, especially if this is something that takes you by surprise and is less than enchanting. The potential for significant spiritual or emotional growth is there along with a fairly heavy dose of enlightenment or inspiration, which Pisces do extremely well. Something new is likely to come into you life which is likely to also have a bearing on those long-term changes noted above. Job and career improvements are another possibility along with very positive interactions between you and members of the opposite sex. The Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse on New Year's Eve (or New Year's Day if you live in Australia or that side of the globe) occurs in fellow Water Sign, Cancer, your 5th House of ego definition, self-expression, creativity, children, romance, entertainment and speculation. This eclipse is a member of the 12 North family of the Saros Series and according to eclipse guru, Bernadette Brady, it's influence frequently involves an unexpected increase in responsibility, often because someone else is unable to carry it any longer. The results of this are typically positive by helping you to see what you're capable of handling and thus improving your self-esteem. This particular eclipse includes two retrograde planets, i.e. Mars and Mercury, who are in your 6th and 11th Houses, respectively. Mars RX was discussed earlier, so this eclipse will further emphasize the work to be done in that area. Mercury RX is a time for rethinking, re-planning, revising and reconsidering. Considering the fact that this is the house where Pluto is doing some remodeling, this will help you think about those issues related to your group associations and goals and the quincunx between Mars and Mercury will help effect an adjustment or change of direction. Be particularly on the lookout for anyone who is trying to undermine you covertly, i.e. pretends to be your friend but really isn't, or for any self-defeating behaviors. All of these influences are additional nudges along the path being mapped out by those outer planets, so pay attention. Short-term Aspects December 1: Venus goes into Sagittarius, your 10th House of career and reputation. This will last until Christmas, so use it to promote yourself in a positive way since you'll be viewed very favorably during this time. Today is a favorable time to seek inspiration with regard to where you want to go or something you want to achieve and how to get there. December 2: Full Moon today as described above. December 4: Positive recognition from someone you respect will provide new insights into your capabilities. December 5: Mercury goes into Capricorn, which will facilitate communications with your friends and associates and also help you come up with ideas relative to your goals. A conflict with an authority figure, probably on the job, is possible. Don't take any unnecessary chances today, either, as you may be accident prone. December 7: Insights and ideas relative to any issues that require attention with friends or group associations as well as your goals are likely today. Avoid guilt trips or other self-defeating thoughts about the past by taking steps to rectify them rather than indulging in a pity party. December 8: Conflicts with coworkers are possible. Use the energy to motivate you toward positive change. December 10: Another good day for insights and inspiration, even if it initially springs from a negative situation. You're likely to get fired up about something related to your work or career today, but unless you can complete it before December 20 it's not likely to come to fruition. December 11: If anyone in your circle of friends or associates is trying to undermine you, it should be apparent today as well as any self-defeating behaviors that may be holding you back. December 14: Expect the unexpected today. Something related to your status in the community is likely to occur that will take you by surprise. This will help reinforce or expand your dreams, however, or provide additional enlightenment. December 15: More inspiration is out there today so find some quiet time to seek it out. December 16: New Moon today as described above. December 17: Interactions with members of the opposite sex should go well today. It's also a favorable day to promote yourself in some way at work, perhaps by putting some extra effort into something you're working on that will provide positive visibility. December 19: Another day of surprises that are likely to relate to your career, reputation or status, but probably in a positive way. December 20: Mars goes retrograde today as described above. Another good day to seek out inspiration and insights regarding anything that might be holding you back and then apply them to how to improve your goals. This enlightenment may come through interactions with your friends or organizations. December 21: The Sun goes into Capricorn, marking the winter solstice. An "Aha!" moment is likely that should be hard to miss. A catch-22, adjustment or change of course is likely. December 24: If you haven't figured out what needs to change with regard to your group associations or goals, you should be able to do so today, so listen up. December 25: Venus goes into Capricorn, which will bring a friendly influence your way, particularly if you're meeting new people. How to go about restructuring your associations should be apparent and have a significant impact on you. If you don't know what those unresolved conflicts at work are that need attention, today is a good one to figure that out. December 26: Mercury goes retrograde today until January 14 so don't buy anything electronic or mechanical at those after-Christmas sales. It's also time to start rethinking those goals and group associations. December 27: Work issues, particularly any related to authority figures, will occupy your mind today. December 28: Deep insights into your goals, particularly monetary ones, are possible as well as making serious progress on resolving any work issues. Interactions with the opposite sex are likely to be intense. There may be someone in your circle of casual friends who becomes a lot closer to you at this time. If you have a significant other or romantic partner, this will be a memorable day. December 29: Assuming more responsibility for achieving your goals or with respect to your group interactions has the potential to provide a significant change in your understanding of yourself and others. December 30: More considerations relative to your friends, group associations, or pursuit of your goals are highlighted. If you've been ignoring reality in any way shape or form it's time to recognize that so it doesn't hold you back any further. December 31: Full Moon/Lunar Eclipse as described above.
