NEW MOON 

The New Year starts with a solar and lunar eclipse, which gives it an extra energy boost. The Solar Eclipse on 5 January brings a huge blast from Capricorn where the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Saturn and Pluto will be along with the Lunar South Node. It's only a partial eclipse which will be visible in parts of China, Russia, and Aleutian islands. Capricorn's energy tends to be serious, responsible, conventional, and intolerant of nonsense. This may be softened somewhat, however, thanks to Neptune's influence, which is coming in from Pisces. This is a highly imaginative sign which could bring some level of compassion and inspiration to any serious decisions that demand attention. This might be a bit exaggerated, however, or overstated, since Jupiter is inflating Neptune's influence in a potentially excessive manner. Jupiter is also semisextile Saturn, however, pushing the authoritarian side to possible extremes as well. This is likely to result in arguments, given Mars has gone into Aries, sign he rules, and where his forceful and impulsive nature receives full expression. Changes of course, perhaps unexpected or sudden, are likely to result, thanks to a quincunx between Uranus, who is getting ready to station the following day, and Venus in debility in Scorpio. Venus in Scorpio tends to be rather passionate to the point of being obsessive about what she wants, but this scenario generally looks as if compromise is likely or a Catch-22 is likely to be the result.

Note that the planets are distributed in a rather lopsided manner at this time with six contiguous empty signs, i.e. Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, and Libra with Venus due to leave Scorpio in a few days, which will make it seven. With so many planets in Capricorn, Earth energy prevails, which is practical, grounded, and authoritative. This works well for getting your affairs in order, planning the year to come, and seeing life as it really is. A solar eclipse often brings events your way that have far-reaching effects. As odd and unexplainable as it may be, these can occur before the eclipse even occurs or sometime after.

FULL MOON

The lunar eclipse on 20 January is in Leo. Lunar eclipses tend to operate more on the emotional level. At this time, the planets are clustered between Sagittarius and Aries adding Scorpio to the empty signs. Arguments are still likely with a lot of head-butting with Mercury in Capricorn and Uranus in Aries squared off in two Cardinal signs ruled by horned animals. Saturn and Mars are also squared off in the same signs with each in dignity, making both strong. This is likely to result in a stand off with neither winning for now. Neptune is still trying to soften things but hasn't come up with any more realistic suggestions than before. The Sun, however, has gone into Aquarius at this point, bringing a bit more egalitarian energy to bear compared to Capricorn. This will thus help somewhat as the month progressed, especially when Mercury enters that sign within a week. Thus, whatever house this lunation occurs in as noted above could see some resolutions by the end of the month, though it won't be handed to you and most likely require some serious negotiation and willingness to compromise.
