Even if you didn't live through them yourself you are probably familiar with the Flower Children of the late 1960s and early 1970s who declared they were living in the Age of Aquarius.

During this time we saw a significant revolution in the area of social change, civil rights, and technological innovation.  All of these and more can be credited to Uranus, who rules Aquarius.  Hippies were all about being unconventional, altruistic, rebellious, and unfettered.  They were nonjudgmental and frequently lived in communes.  Is someone looked like a hippy but was a loner, they were just a bum because hippies hung out in groups.  They were eccentric to say the least.  All these and more are elements of the Aquarian mindset.  They don't blindly follow the rules but will question them.

For example, Aquarian children typically have a lot of friends and thrive on their interactions with them.   They are quite social, often at an earlier age that other children.  As they grow up they're likely to have friends of all ages, not sticking to those in their immediate age group.  This may seem a bit strange, but rest assured it's quite normal for an Aquarius.  Remember that Aquarius rules the 11th House which comprises groups, associations, coworkers, friends, hopes and wishes, meaning these things will be inherently important to all Aquarians.  They are prone to find their identity through their friends and associations, so it's obviously very important to make sure your child is hanging out with the right people, especially since s/he is more likely to be a groupie than a leader.

If an Aquarius child is not receiving enough social interaction they are likely to find it through video games, online chatrooms, or even books.  These are the kids that are most likely to have the TV on while they're doing homework or home alone because they can't stand quiet.  Banishing an Aquarian child to his or her room or to "timeout" is more difficult for them than those who are comfortable being alone.  Needless to say, team sports of whatever variety he or she is best suited for are an excellent activity.  While it's probably not a good idea to impose solitude on an Aquarian child, it doesn't hurt to encourage them to entertain themselves once in a while.  It's also important to instill goals and ambitions as much as possible, though these will be most successful and likely to stick if they involve lots of interaction with other people.  Without a specific goal they may while away their time hanging out and be perfectly happy doing so.  They don't care that much about impressing others and will be perfectly happy as long as their basic needs are met.

Aquarius is a Fixed Sign, meaning that its fellows will be opinionated and not inclined to change their mind or anything else about themselves on a personal level, even if they're out there trying to change the world.  Instill good habits in them early because it will be like pulling teeth to get them to do it later.  Neatness in particular is usually not one of their virtues unless they're blessed with some serious Virgo influences.  They don't much care what others think of them.  Their clothes tend to be unconventional, though this can be greatly influenced by their Ascendant, which deals with outward appearance.  If they are a dyed in the wool Aquarius they may use clothes to express themselves, in which case it will be colorful, possibly won't match, and is likely to be slightly unconventional.  They probably won't care if something is out of style as long as they like it.

As a rule Aquarians are emotionally detached, though this can be greatly affected by their Moon Sign, especially if it's a Water Sign such as Pisces, Cancer or Scorpio.  Barring that, they'll seldom share emotions or feelings, though they'll be very willing to listen to others and show concern for those in need.  As an Air Sign they like to talk and communicate, no matter how young they are.  They can be loud and boisterous, but not necessarily, since there are so many other chart elements that can put a damper on such traits.  They like surprises and unique experiences, the more the better.  It's also a good idea to emphasize and encourage development of their individuality so they're less likely to be lost in the crowd.  Aquarius children are usually easy going and their friendliness extends to family as well.

The best way to communicate with an Aquarian child is to use others as a positive example.  Since he or she is inherently interested in other people, this will get and hold their attention.  Don't compare them to others in a derogatory way, however, because they'll probably just tune you out.  This is when the fact that they're a Fixed Sign becomes readily apparent.  If you persist in criticizing them it can cause serious harm to their self-image because they don't believe they can change.  Another means of getting something across would be to explain the affect their behavior has on others.

As far as career guidance is concerned, Aquarians like work in which they can be allowed to find their own way of doing things.  They don't like to be micromanaged, even by their parents, and can be quite inventive when left to their own devices.  High tech fields and technology are good fits, particularly communication fields where they can interact with others.  They also do well in social work or promoting charitable causes due to their inherent concern for mankind.  An Aquarian will find making a difference in society very satisfying.  This is something they comprehend at an amazingly young age.
