Lunations and Long-term Aspects

The New Year begins with a cosmic bang with a New Moon on January 1st in your sign, Cappy, and parked on your natal Sun if your birthday is right around January 3rd.  If this is you, some of you already are dealing with Pluto rocking your boat and this lunation may definitely come with some kick.  Mercury is in there, too, so we have a lunation quartet comprising the Sun, Moon, Mercury and Pluto that is also part of a Cardinal Grand Square.  Thus, there are all sorts of astrological influences active as these energies blend and not in a particularly friendly manner, especially for those of you with your natal Sun in Cardinal signs such as Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.  So first, let's look at the quartet.  A New Moon usually brings something new, which will be at the personal level.  Pluto is all about transformations and whatever it takes to accomplish them.  This can mean anything from taking control to eliminating something or someone from your life who is holding you back.  Mercury, natural ruler of communications, thoughts, ideas and information, should be very helpful in figuring out exactly what this is all about.  However, determining what you need to do much less how probably won't be that easy.

These planets are squaring Uranus in Aries, your 4th house of home environment, cultural roots, memories, endings and new beginnings.  Uranus is unpredictable by nature but he excels at stirring up surprises.  He rules innovation, rebellion, explosions, breakthroughs and anything unconventional.  This could come from within or without, i.e. your own volition or external events but it will be a challenge either way.  Uranus is opposed by Mars in Libra, your 10th house of career, reputation, public image and status.  Mars is in debility in Libra but in this case it's probably a good thing since it will tone down his aggressive nature to more acceptable levels.  If you're trying to promote yourself you want people to like you, which is more likely if you're not coming on like a pack of hungry wolves.  An opposition usually indicates the need for balance which implies that whatever changes are occurring or you want to accomplish either at home or in your life will require balancing your ambitions such that you don't burn yourself out or get carried away.  You may have a million dollar idea you want to get off the ground ASAP but such does not occur overnight.

Messing with both Uranus and Mars in your 7th house of close relationships is Jupiter, who's retrograde which often indicates a deep philosophical examination of your attitude toward that part of your life.  Jupiter is typically about expansion and maybe that's what this is about but it's more likely to be on the subconscious level at this time.  Maybe you're feeling as if you're too isolated or need to expand your relationships but doing so with everything else that's going on isn't going to be easy.  Remember that the 7th includes not only your significant other but also business partners, close friends and relatives, and business professionals.  For example, you may be thinking about changing to a different accountant because the one you have isn't meeting your expectations or perhaps you would like to pursue a personal relationship but find you really don't have the time or emotional energy.  Thus you have catch-22 situations all over the place.

Your sign ruler, Saturn, may lend some assistance, however.  He's in Scorpio, your 11th house of networking, friends, organizations, groups and goals and just happens to be trining Jupiter.  This suggests that someone in this part of your life can lend structure and advise that may be able to help.  Perhaps a friend will be the catalyst or maybe simply focusing on your goals is what you should be doing at this time.

The Full Moon on January 15 is in your polar sign, Cancer, your 7th house of relationships suggesting an ending, culmination or shift to a new phase.  The lunation is in an aspect pattern known as a Triangle of Potential with Saturn which suggests again that discipline related to your goals or perhaps a friend will be able to help you sort things out.  Mercury has moved into Aquarius, your 2nd  house of income, possessions, finances, needs, comforts and pleasures and is sextile Uranus which suggests that information or ideas related to this part of your life will provide an opportunity for that change or new beginning Uranus is vying for.  Venus is still retrograde in Capricorn, the energy of which has been running in the background since the solstice and relates to recognizing what you value you the most.  She is squaring Mars in the 10th which suggests that perhaps your career or status ambitions are in conflict with what is really most important in your life.  Cappies are well represented by the goat who strives to climb the highest mountain regardless of how rugged or difficult this may be.  However, this often causes relationship problems, even though everything you do is usually motivated by taking care of your family whom you love dearly.  Family and tradition is important to you yet it may be where you spend the least time and energy.  Recognizing what is near and dear to your heart and then taking stock of where it is in your daily priorities should yield some interest considerations.

This month has a second New Moon thanks to our goofed up Gregorian calendar that is based on the ego of ancient Roman emperors as opposed to our planet's relationship to the Sun and Moon as it should be.  I read a book a while ago where the author theorized that this illogical structure driving our culture was the main reason the world is in the state it is today.  But I digress.  This lunation occurs in Aquarius, your 2nd house of income, needs and pleasures as noted earlier.  It's sextile Uranus, suggesting a new opportunity similar to the aspect from Mercury a few weeks before.  The Sun/Moon pair is also quincunx Jupiter, suggesting a change of course, adjustment or need to justify your position.  A quincunx is also known as an inconjunct and is somewhat unstable and uncomfortable because it demands some sort of change or shift.  Tied to Jupiter it looks as if those relationship issues are involved while Venus and Pluto oppose the whole thing with them conjunct in Capricorn and most likely affecting those of your born around January 4th.  This implies the relationship could be one from the past that either needs to be eliminated or revitalized.  Good luck with that one.

If you haven't already had your solar return you will before this month is out.  If you're really curious what might be coming your way this year you would probably enjoy your solar return report.  When the Sun returns to its natal position that chart becomes a supplement to your natal chart that will be in effect for the coming year.  Thus, it's likely that everything that is going on at this time will be in effect one way or another for all of 2014.  Change is inevitable so put it at the top of your list of New Year's Resolutions.
