Lunations and Long-term Aspects

The new year starts with a New Moon on New Years Day which looks a bit ominous on its own but how it operates for you personally depends on how it interacts with your natal, progressed and solar return charts.  Actually, your solar return is coming up rather quickly and is probably already phasing in.  As you may already know, a solar return is one of the best means for determining what to expect in the coming year.  But I digress.  Sorry for the advertisement but I have Christmas bills to pay.  :-D

The lunation itself occurs in Capricorn, your 12th house of inspiration, enlightenment, spirituality, transcendence, institutions, seclusion, confinement, hidden enemies and self-undoing or what I tend to refer to as the "angels and demons" house.  This is where you subconscious resides as well, that part of you that can provide a tremendous amount of insight and information when you know how to access it as well as listen to its promptings.  A New Moon in this house implies something new so ponder which of these matters has the most importance for you at this time and see what comes to light.  The Sun and Moon are accompanied by a plethora of other planets including Mercury and Pluto, which are conjunct the New Moon, providing additional energy.  Mercury rules communication and Pluto is about transformation, power, control and eliminating things you no longer need whether it involves cleaning out the garage or relationships.  If your birthday is right around January 31 the lunation forms a semi-sextile with your natal Sun, hinting at the potential for an opportunity that will take some effort on your part to achieve.  This aspect also tends to bring friction and annoyances, which are often opportunities in disguise as they get your attention and taunt you to take care of business.

Looking at the chart for the lunation itself is a bit of a scary sight as it contains a quadruple Cardinal Grand Cross which brings a whole lot of tension.  Mars is in a degree in Libra that is closest to that of the lunation and its escorts so is most relevant.  Libra is your 9th house of beliefs, expectations, higher learning, religion, politics, long-distance travel and relocation and as a fellow Air Sign, trines Aquarius and brings harmonious energy.  Mars is in debility in Libra where his action-oriented, independent nature can be inhibited by Libra's need for balance that can sometimes manifest as indecisiveness.  The square with that New Moon quartet in your 12th suggests a conflict between something in your subconscious and your belief system.  Think about what is most important to you in the 9th and what you've been thinking about doing with regard to it.  If you're having difficulty moving forward with it then there is probably something in your subconscious holding you back such as lack of confidence, knowledge or past experiences.  Your chances of resolving this conflict are good, however, which also suggests that it's time for overcoming old demons that may be holding you back.

Uranus is in Aries, your 3rd house of thoughts, ideas, siblings and neighbors and also squaring the lunation.  However, Aries, is sextile Aquarius so this conflicting aspect is also softened for you.  Uranus in this house can bring surprises and unexpected events but it's also conducive to innovative thoughts, breakthroughs, and independence which can also relate to those angels and demons, giving you another favorable boost toward overcoming them.  If your birthday is right around January 29 this aspect will have the strongest effect.  Jupiter is in Cancer, your 6th house of work, health, daily activities and pets.  He's currently retrograde, internalizing his energy.  Jupiter expands what he touches, which can be either good or bad, depending on what it is.  He's opposing the lunation quartet, an aspect that represents a tug-o-war and the need for balance.  While retrograde he often relates to ethical issues or your philosophy of life.  With Cancer your house of work perhaps your dilemma relates to your job.  For example, you may be thinking about going back to school or noticing that you're really not in a job where you can operate at your best.  However, breaking away is often not easy, especially when you have bills to pay or other obligations.  If your birthday is right around February 5 Jupiter is quincunx your natal Sun, suggesting it's time to change direction, justify or defend your current position or make a few adjustments. 

Jupiter is trining Saturn in fellow Fixed sign, Scorpio, your 10th house of career, reputation, public image and status.  Saturn is all about structure, discipline, responsibility and ambition and he's accidentally dignified in this house.  Jupiter retrograde indicates ruminations about work or health and Saturn is the builder and organizer which can help you plan what needs to be done.  Thus, you have some help out there toward making any changes.

The Full Moon on January 15 is in Cancer, your house of work.  This type of lunation usually brings an ending, culmination or shift to a new phase, another indicator for some changes in this part of your life.  Mercury has moved into your sign and is sextile Uranus, an excellent combination for innovative solutions.  The Sun and Moon are hooked up with Saturn in an aspect pattern known as a Triangle of Potential which suggests that planning and assuming responsibility can help you use this lunation to your advantage.  Venus has been retrograde since the solstice on December 21 and she is also in your 12th house.  Venus retrograde is an excellent time to figure out what you value which is useful in setting your priorities.  She is squaring Mars in your 9th of beliefs and such, indicating sorting through all these matters won't necessarily be easy since there may be some conflicts to resolve.  Nonetheless, the emphasis again seems to be on work and career issues though your health may also be involved.

The New Moon on January 30 is in your sign and conjunct your natal Sun if your birthday is right around January 30.  The lunation is sextile Uranus, again pointing toward a breakthrough or innovative solution, even though you may still be struggling with something at the subconscious level.  At this time Venus retrograde is conjunct Pluto which suggests the need to do some house cleaning in your psyche which could relate to your behavior toward something or someone and what you value the most in life.  Mercury is poised to move into your 2nd house of possessions, finances, needs, comforts and pleasures, further pointing toward defining what means the most to you and what you need.  The New Moon is quincunx Jupiter which is still in your house of work, again suggesting a change of course.  Those of your born February 1 will feel this the most and should take advantage of this extra push to help you make any adjustments that your subconscious has been nagging you about.  There's a lot of cosmic help out there this month, including this second New Moon, to help you assess your situation, whatever it may be, and how you can improve it through making a few changes.  Unless you're deliriously happy with the status quo, you should probably take advantage of it and head in that direction.
